Get Access To High-Performance Computing Resources

Research Computing access is project-based and depends on your role at UVA and the sensitivity of your data. This page helps you find the right environment and next steps.

Step 1: Review eligibility for computing resources

Who can request Research Computing resources?

  • Principal Investigators (PIs) and PI-eligible staff can initiate projects and request resources.
  • Researchers, postdocs, and students work within projects created by a PI, who grants collaborators access to those projects.

Step 2: Review your research data sensitivity

Your data classification determines where your data can be stored and processed and which computing environment applies. These are separated into two zones: the Standard Security Zone and the High Security Zone. Not sure how your data is classified?

Step 3: Choose an HPC environment

The pages below explain what is available in each security zone, how to request access, and what to expect after your request.

The Standard Security Zone (SSZ) supports most UVA research computing and storage needs. This environment is appropriate for projects using data that is not highly sensitive and provides access to shared high-performance computing systems and data storage.

This environment provides secure computing and storage that meet institutional and regulatory requirements for working with sensitive research data.
