A Message From Our AVP

Portrait of Joshua Baller

Since 2023, I have had the privilege of leading UVA Research Computing (UVA-RC). In that time, the UVA-RC team has focused on building out a new array of services that address the needs of both our classical high-performance computing community and the many areas of inquiry that have developed increasing data intensive workflows in the past decade. With the increasing interest in generative AI, we are seeing the research computing community grow even further.

UVA-RC's mission is to provide the UVA research community with the basic cyberinfrastructure it needs for the advancement of the research program, whether that be computation, storage, platforms, or expertise. I aim for Research Computing's services to be accessible and relevant to both the first-time user and the researcher team that consumes 20 million core hours a year.

As I look ahead, I am excited by the many upgrades and improvements we have planned. We will see the commissioning of a new data center in 2029 that will allow UVA-RC to further expand its computational offerings, including new GPUs to support ongoing demand. New storage services will be deployed to meet needs for long-term retention. Lastly, our team of experts, including the Data Analytics Center, continues to grow as we discover new demands for collaborative support.

Our People

At the heart of all our endeavors is a world-class team of specialists

Who We Are

Our Mission

The mission of Research Computing is to provide advanced computational tools and support, thereby enabling researchers at the University of Virginia to further computational research and push the boundaries of knowledge.

To achieve our mission:

  • We provide traditional high-performance computing, secure data platforms and computing, and private-cloud services with on-premises hardware.
  • We provide technical assistance for these on-premises platforms, installed software applications and environments to facilitate research workflows.
  • We support researchers with software development, data analysis, and research lifecycles in key domains, and train researchers in best practices for running software projects on RC-provided platforms.
  • We facilitate job automations and continuous integration/continuous delivery pipelines for researchers to manage their deployments.
  • We develop unified, self-service management tools for UVA researchers to collaborate on various research platform offerings.

Vision

Our vision is to cultivate, and continually improve, a computational ecosystem where innovation thrives and where UVA researchers, across disciplines, will have the tools to transform their research and discovery.
