  • UVA RC GenAI User Guide

Introduction Getting Started Using the Browser Interface API Access Policies and Limiatations Frequently Asked Questions Introduction UVARC GenAI is a UVA-hosted multimodal LLM and VLM server available to UVA research computing members with an active research computing account. Like other common multimodal platforms (e.g., ChatGPT or Claude), UVA RC GenAI can be used to assist with research, coding, and writing support, all data is securely processed in-house at UVA. Currently, UVARC GenAI is running the Kimi K2.5 model and is accessible via browser and API. UVA RC GenAI is only being offered to research projects; it is not available for academic or administrative purposes.

UVA Research Computing (UVA RC) GenAI Now available from UVA Research Computing is UVA RC GenAI, a high‑powered generative AI platform running on Kimi K2.5, an open-source, 1-trillion parameter multimodal model well suited for visual analysis, agentic applications, and code‑based tasks. Open to Research Computing users, the tool runs on eight NVIDIA H200 graphics processing units (GPUs) and allows researchers to submit up to 60 queries per minute at no charge.
Compared to commercial tools or other large language models built for specific research tasks, UVA RC GenAI offers reduced costs, enhanced data security, operational efficiency, and clear institutional ownership.

  • AI as a Research Tool

AI is more than ChatGPT Artificial Intelligence, or AI, is a combination of computing platforms and programs that emulate human thought processes for making decisions and solving complex problems. The technology behind AI is much more than GenAI (i.e., applications like ChatGPT or CoPilot). While ChatGPT is a popular example of AI because it simulates conversations with people, AI itself includes many other technologies and applications that can be used to explore research data. Other terms that may be used with AI, but have subtle differences, are Machine Learning (ML), Deep Learning (DL), and Large Language Models (LLMs).
Using AI to Explore Your Data AI can be used to explore research data by employing sophisticated algorithms to analyze vast datasets efficiently and accurately.
